In the background just out of sight but ever present: Elaine, Arkansas, September 30–October 1, 1919 mass murder / lynching of The Progressive Farmers and Household Union of America. Arkansas, Governor Charles Hillman Brough, led a detachment of federal troops into the county, were hundreds of Blacks were killed. Estimates of 100 to 237 Blacks were killed and or lynched, by white federal troops and civilians.
